Bringing Energy Efficiency to a New Science Hall

Eureka College Sanders Hall : Eureka, IL

PROJECT SIZE & COST

17,270 square feet | $7 million

THE CHALLENGE

A generous gift from a retired Eureka College professor helped fund the construction of Sanders Hall, a four-story addition to the existing 1916-era science building. Energy efficiency and use of local resources were top priorities for the university, as was achieving LEED (green building) certification.

KED SOLUTION

The new facility features a state-of-the-art chemistry lab, tiered multimedia classroom with teleconferencing technology, four classrooms, seminar room, faculty offices, study lounge and more. To address energy efficiency concerns, we used special modeling software to simulate the building’s energy performance prior to construction, then installed a geothermal system for heating and cooling, an energy recovery system, a lab ventilation system and LED lighting. Sanders Hall received LEED Silver certification.
