Designing a New, Co-Op Grocery Store in the Foundry

Green Top Grocery : Bloomington, Illinois

PROJECT SIZE & COST

10,000 square feet | $3.6 million

THE CHALLENGE
We were hired to design a building fit-out, of an existing tenant space for Green Top Grocery, a cooperatively owned grocery store that places priority on local farmers, produces, and organic selections. The grocery store needed to include a full-service kitchen, a food serving line, a classroom for cooking classes, and large-scale refrigeration cases for traditional grocery storage and shopping. The store also requested that we include green energy, if possible.

KED SOLUTION : Incorporating Green Solutions
We incorporated a heat recovery water heater into our HVAC system, which utilizes the heat that is rejected from refrigerated display cases to heat the domestic water for the building. This is a very energy efficient and green design, meeting the client’s request for green energy. The systems were designed with the client’s specific needs in mind as well, incorporating all of the unique, desired amenities’ needs into our systems. Green Top Grocery is now open and providing local and organic grocery options to its community, as well as ready to eat meals, cooking classes, and more.
