Upgrading a Hospital’s Linear Accelerator with No Interruption to Service

OSF St. Anthony Medical Center : Rockford, Illinois

PROJECT SIZE & COST

1,620 square feet | $558,553

THE CHALLENGE
The hospital needed to update their linear accelerator (LINAC) machine in their cancer treatment facility to provide patients with an incredibly accurate radiation treatment. Lighting within the vault and mechanical upgrades were other issues that needed to be addressed. The hospital also wanted the completed upgrade to have a more inviting feel. With this upgrade came space and safety constraints, due to the thick walls that are in place to shield radiation.

KED SOLUTION : Innovative Design and Installation
We worked around the radiation shield, by using a cable tray to provide a pathway into the room for the control cabling, which allowed the radiologists more control over the LINAC machine to provide targeted radiation. In order for the new linear accelerator to function, we also had to replace the existing air handling unit and chiller with larger units to support the new machine. As a result, we expanded the mechanical room in order to fit the larger units. We also designed Sky Factory lights on the ceiling of the vault, to provide patients with a picturesque sky to look at during treatment, creating a more relaxing environment.
